This past Saturday, November 2nd the 3rd annual Spooktacluar Costume Surf Contest took place at the main entrance of Playa Guiones. Enjoy the photos and video of this year’s event and we hope to see everybody back next year!
Originally this contest was planned for Saturday, October 26th. However, due to poor weather it was rescheduled to November 2nd and conditions were excellent for the event.
All kinds of costumes were on display as surfing pirates, dinosaurs, and super heroes like Wonder Woman and some Spidermans’ along with many others took advantage of that small, clean conditions.
Here’s what contest coordinator Lily Walters had to say about the purpose of this event: ‘It’s the third year of the contest. This year we teamed up with trunk or treat too which was also a fundraiser. All money raised is being split 3 ways between scholarship programs for schools Casa Estrellas and Del Mar Academy and remaining funds are for helping the Santa Marta school with some expenses.
We love doing this. It’s such an awesome season kick off community building event. It’s nice to not take things quite so serious for a minute… In the end it is all for fun and this year it was for a great cause. This is the first year we have all worked together and it feels nice to do something that unites the school communities. Most contestants were kids this year. We are looking to up the participation from adults next year.’
Co-organizer Jim Ewing added: ‘It went fantastic! We had three heats of groms, one heat of teenagers and a heat of adults, super fun!’

For the surf contest we more than doubled our amount raised thanks in a big way to the donation of the surfboard which was raffled off by Storm Equipment out of Garza. Other prize donations included Olo Alaia, Coconut Harry’s, Nosara Tico Surf, Monkey Maffia, Nosara Surf Shop, Manta Ray, Nosara Day Camp, Tammy Bennet, Jill Ryan and Jaime Wirtenson.
Furtermore we also like to thank our judges and the Surfing Nosara team, Prove Nothing for the poster work, Hot Tamale for event coordination, the Bomberos and life guards for hooking us up with tents. And last but not least Agua Tibia and Danny the dinosaur who pretty much stole the show.’
