The Costa Rica Blues Festival brings the feel of traditional summer blues festivals from the USA to the beautiful beaches of Guanacaste every February, which are outdoors, for all ages, with a great variety of food and drinks, traditional games, raffles, auctions and all kinds of activities besides the music.
This festival started in 2008 by the initiative of Mauricio “Mo” Ledezma, leader of the local blues band “Blues Devils”, who has brought world class blues bands to the festival such as Guitar Shorty, Diunna Greenleaf, Smokin Joe Kubek & Bnois King and Texas Johnny Brown, Annika Chambers and Walter Trout among others.
The ninth edition of the festival will feature an amazing line-up of both Costa Rican and international bands and artists including Blues Hall of Famer Joe Louis Walker, from Austin, Texas: Chris Ruest-Eve Monsees-Mike Buck, From San Jose, California J.C. Smith and from Philadelphia, PA, Band leader and International Clinician/Ambassador for C.F. Martin & Co: Craig Thatcher.
The festival is a charitable event that benefits the local NGO Abriendo Mentes, which is an organization that empowers individuals from rural/underserved communities of Potrero and Brasilito in Guanacaste, Costa Rica to develop the skills they need to seize educational and economic opportunities for themselves and their families. Through a free after-school program, children have the opportunity they would not otherwise have to participate in English and computer classes, receive academic support, learn environmental education and much more. For adults, Abriendo Mentes offers education classes, vocational training, women’s specific programs and community engagement activities to empower them to seek employment opportunities.
